The dramatic backdrops in New Zealand make it one of the most sought-after elopement locations globally. The backdrops can include glaciers, alpine ridgelines, and hidden lakes. In a nutshell, something that would look right out of a movie set. Who wouldn't prefer an intimate wedding with such a backdrop?
However, such wedding elopements require careful planning, which brings us to the important question: What Do You Need for Elopement?
Today, we'll not only answer this question but also help you understand the different types of elopement so that you can plan better.
Type of Elopements
Let’s first understand the different types of elopements.
1. Traditional Elopement
Traditional elopements typically involve ceremonies held on accessible, ground-level terrain at scenic, exclusive venues. The guest list is shorter than that of a traditional ceremony, but such ceremonies are common, which is why many couples who prefer more intimate or adventurous ceremonies opt for a heli-elopement, which we will discuss next.
2. Heli-elopement

Heli-elopements are ideal for couples seeking privacy, dramatic backdrops, and a genuinely remote and unique location that surpasses traditional ground-based ceremonies. As the name suggests, these locations are accessible by a helicopter. The exclusivity of such locations certainly makes the ceremony a truly once-in-a-lifetime event for couples.
If you're thinking, managing such heli-elopements is difficult, don't worry! We offer heli-elopement packages where we manage almost everything for you. For the rest of the things you need, refer to this blog post.
What Do You Need for Elopement?
The things you would need for elopement can be broadly divided into 2 main categories that is, the legal & administrative requirements and the practical & logistical arrangements, both of which we will cover below.
Legal & Administrative Requirements
Eloping in New Zealand is a wonderful experience, but only when you handle the requirements in advance. Let's look at the legal & administrative requirements first.
1. Eligible Partners
The marriage eligibility rules in New Zealand also apply to elopements. The partner eligibility requirements are the same:
- Both partners must be at least 18 years old.
- If aged 16-17, according to the New Zealand government website, such individuals must obtain family court consent before applying for a marriage license.
- Neither partner can be already married or in a civil union.
- Any previous marriages (if applicable) must be proven to be dissolved through divorce or death certificates.
- Partners shouldn't be close blood relatives. The celebrant should legally verify this before the ceremony.
International couples can also elope in New Zealand. They just need to provide a valid ID for heli elopements.
2. Marriage Licence/Notice of Intended Marriage
Couples need a Marriage License (Notice of Intended Marriage) before any wedding ceremony in New Zealand, including heli-elopements.
You can easily apply online at: https://www.govt.nz/browse/family-and-whanau/getting-married/get-a-marriage-licence/
You'll get a license in 3 working days, and it remains active for 3 months.
3. Registered Celebrant/Officiant
Every legal marriage in New Zealand must be conducted by a registered celebrant. However, when you choose an elopement package from us, you don't need to worry about this, as we can handle celebrant booking for you as well. This is where we outshine our competition.
4. Two Witnesses

New Zealand law requires at least two witnesses to be physically present at the ceremony to sign the paperwork. The good news is that in the case of elopements, even the photographer, the celebrant, or even the guide can step in as the witness. Once you communicate your witness requirements, we can usually handle them for you.
You can even bring your own couple of witnesses if you prefer that.
5. Ceremony Documentation & Registration
Every marriage in New Zealand requires two legal forms, called the "Copy of Particulars of Marriage," which must be signed on the day of the ceremony. One copy remains with the couple, and the celebrant uses another to register your marriage.
Since we can book the Celebrant for you, you need not worry about this. You just need to make sure you sign these forms on the same day.
In the case of heli-elopements, additional details, such as location coordinates, may also be required. However, our experienced celebrants can handle that.
6. Permits
Heli-elopements look effortless in photos, but legally they require several formal permissions like:
- Helicopter landing & take-off permissions
- Location permissions
- And so on
The process for obtaining these permits begins weeks in advance. This is where our experience comes into play. With our years of experience, we know exactly which permits are required and how to obtain them ahead of your special day, ensuring a seamless experience.
Since most of the locations we offer for heli-elopements are ones our clients have chosen in the past, we know exactly what's required, and therefore, this is another aspect you need not worry about.
Practical & Logistic Arrangements
Let’s now look at some of the practical & logistical arrangements you need to look into.
7. Vendors

Elopements are vendor-heavy. That's why you need to coordinate with numerous vendors, like:
- Photographer & Videographer
Ideally, you need videographers and photographers who are experienced in capturing elopements rather than traditional ceremonies. That's because elopements pose unique challenges, such as remote locations, fierce winds, and so on. Only experienced photographers and videographers can capture your special moments in such conditions.
However, when you get a package from us, the professional photographer and videographer services are included, which means you need not worry about dealing with a photographer separately.
- Elopement Planner
An elopement planner understands your love story and vision to help you choose the perfect site for your elopement and bring your vision to life. The planner also coordinates with various vendors to bring this vision to life.
With our elopement packages, you don't need to worry about hiring a consultant separately. Pre-elopement consultation is included, helping you save time and money.
- Hair & makeup Artist
You need to look your best on your special day, and that's why an experienced hair & makeup artist is a must.
- Florist
Don't forget to get some bouquets that the fierce winds can't dismantle.
8. Attire & Gear for Remote Spots
Elopements demand practical attire. Sure enough, you would need your wedding dress, but layers are also required to better handle the weather. It's best to choose light, flowy fabrics that offer freedom of movement. Pair that with footwear that provides a sturdy grip. Ankle boots are a great option.
Lastly, secure all your small items in a zipper pouch to ensure the wind doesn't blow them away.
9. Weather Backup Plan
According to a New Zealand Government report, Mountain weather in New Zealand is notoriously unpredictable. Our pilots and/or any certified pilot make the final go/no-go call based on real-time aviation safety, since your safety is our prime concern. That's why having a weather backup plan is necessary. This is where our experience comes into play. We not only ensure flexibility in schedule, but also include alternative landing sites to ensure your special day isn't bogged down by weather.
It's equally important for the couple to know the backup plan in advance as well.

10. Rings
You can get a scenic backdrop, an intimate wedding setting, and cool weather on-site when it comes to elopements, but one thing you can't get in these remote locations is rings. Missing or forgotten rings can ruin the entire ceremony.
That's why this is an item that you can’t afford to miss. Not only that, it is important to store and carry them right. Follow the tips below to do so:
- Secure rings in a sturdy box.
- Hand them to a trusted vendor before boarding. Alternatively, you can keep them in your backpack in a secure pocket. That's because pilots often prefer passengers to be empty-handed.
- Ensure ring boxes have magnetic closures or are in the form of tethered pouches to reduce the risk of loss.
An additional tip we would like to share is photograph and value your rings ahead of time and if possible, include them in the insurance to ensure you don't face any losses in case they're lost.
11. Comfortable Backpack
Even with a small packing list, you need to carry quite some stuff, that is why carrying a backpack with you is ideal. A 20L-30L backpack is ideal for things like:
- Layers
- Water
- Small first-aid kit
- High-energy snacks
- Valuables
- And so on
Such small backpacks can be stored safely in the helicopter cabin, making transfers easy. A backpack also reduces the risk of losing items in transit.
Pro tip:
Ensure the backpack is within the weight or baggage limits.
12. Food & Snacks
Secluded landing sites often have strict biosecurity rules, and hence, the food items you can carry with you are restricted. However, carrying some food items is a necessity, as the elopement can last hours, especially considering the commute. Additionally, many NZ operators offer gourmet helicopter picnics as part of the package as well.
However, do carry some food items in your backpack, but ensure:
- Food is in sealed containers.
- It's best to use insulated containers and spill-proof drinking water.
Lastly, carry all the leftovers with you since biosecurity laws prevent any kind of littering.
Keeping yourself hydrated and well-fed is necessary to make your day special.
Faqs
What Are the Biggest Elopement Mistakes?
Not handling legalities and a lack of location knowledge are the two problems that can cause plenty of problems when it comes to elopement.
What Are the Three Parts of the Elopement Process?
When (date), Where (location), and What (Ceremonial process) are three parts of the elopement process.
Can You Elope Immediately?
No, you can't elope in New Zealand since you need to get the mandatory Marriage licence. If you already have that, then yes, you can elope immediately, if your operator and weather permit. However, it's a good idea to plan well in advance to ensure the experience progresses smoothly.
